Nutritional & Feeding
What makes working dog food different?
Working and sporting dogs generally have higher and more intense workloads, of those pet dogs. Therefore, working dog nutrition is adjusted to cater for this lifestyle.
This can include higher calorific content and increased energy. This is usually delivered through increased proteins and fats content.
How to switch or transition to Griffiths' foods?
It is important that you switch your dog's food gradually from his current food to avoid digestive upset or tummy trouble. This can take time, so it's always advisable to keep a reasonable amount of the current food that your dog is used to.
To transition, mix your dog’s current food with his new food. Over 10 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current dog food while increasing the amount of new dog food.
Starting at 10% Griffiths' and 90% existing food, and 90% Griffiths' and 10% previous food on day 10.
If you're transitioning from raw food, we advise extending this to 15+ days; to create the most gentle, gradual transition.
When do I switch from puppy to adult food?
Dogs are considered adults from 12-18 months (up to 2 years for giant breeds).
However, this doesn't mean you need to change the food at this point. It is much more important to assess that the puppy has completed key development.
Our puppy food has increased levels of protein (for overall development) and calcium and phosphorus (for bone and skeletal development). These are at the optimum level to ensure healthy and steady growth of the puppy.
As all of our foods contain high levels of meat, and naturally occurring calcium and phosphorus; moving over too soon or too late isn't a major disadvantage. Although we recommended waiting until the puppy has achieved a good level of body mass (total size, weight and body fat) and has a positive body score (doesn't look too thin, ribs can be felt through body fat cover).
